Lanzarote is an increasingly popular tourist destination renowned for it's unusual volcanic landscape (the region of Montãnas del Fuego is particularly barren following a multitude of eruptions in the eighteenth century). One of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is now under Spanish control but has in the past been settled by the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Ottomans, and the Spanish. Whilst the main attraction on the island is the Montãnas del Fuego in the Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote is also a great location for trying Canary Islands cuisine and for soaking up the sun on it's many beaches. Arrecife, one of the largest towns on the island, has ferry connections to Puerto del Rosario and Gran Canaria whilst Playa Blanca on the south coast has a direct connection to Corralejo on the island of Fuerteventura.

Lanzarote is serviced by a single airport, Aeropuerto de Lanzarote (Lanzarote Airport), which is located six kilometres west of Arrecife on the LZ-2 (Carretera de Arrecife a Yaiza) main road. Although the island has a small sedentary population the airport sees close to six million passengers a year, a testament to the popularity of the island as a holiday resort location. Many international airlines use the airport, including BMI, Easy Jet, First Choice Airways, Fly Globespan, Futura International, Jet2.com, LTE International, Monarch, Thomsonfly, Thomas Cook Airlines and XL Airways. Car hire facilities are available from Avis, Auto Reisen, 5Car, Cabrera Medina, Cicar, Hertz, Europcar and Payless. Arrecife is directly along the LZ-2 from the airport, whilst the Timanfaya National Park is located on the LZ-67 further south on the LZ-2.
